MediaTemple is a great hosting company. I've used them several times for PHP and Ruby on Rails projects. They have a very knowledgeable staff who are quick to respond to support tickets. Not to mention their vast knowledge base of virtually any topic related to servers and hosting. MediaTemple also has a respectable virtualization setup so you can scale with ease. MediaTemple is also host to some extremely large companies (http://www.mediatemple.net/company/clients/) so they do have some cred behind their name. I should also note that they have one of the easiest and most simple (yet comprehensive) dashboards to manage your account.
